Dawood Sarkhosh is a multi-talented artist with a passion for music and poetry. Born in 1971 in Urozgan, Afghanistan, he began composing poetry at the young age of 9 and learned to play the Dumbura and sing at the age of 17. He received musical training on the Hazaragi Danbura from his older brother Sarwar Sarkhosh, and studied the accordion under Pakistani composer Arbab Ali Khan.
During a time when Afghan music was suppressed under the rule of fundamentalists, Sarkhosh worked to revitalize the art form through his compositions, which were inspired by a sense of nationalism and the struggles of exile. His songs reflect the nostalgia and difficulties of refugee life experienced by millions of Afghans around the world. They are not just commercial hits, but rather artistic expressions of the human experience.
